Have you ever heard about Atlantis? I suppose all of us have heard something and wondered about the lost land Atlantis. Is it a legend? Or has it really existed? Unfortunatelly, we still don’t know the answer of this question. But from the beginning of history, Atlantis subjects to lots of poems, books, art, and literature. There are more than 80 books written about the lost land. Moreover, there are signs which can prove that it has existed at one time.
The name Atlantis has been mentioned firstly in the dialogues of Platon. Platon’s famous dialogues Kritias and Timaos, he mentions about Atlantis. According to the dialogues, Atlantis has existed 9000 years earlier than Platon. Then, as a result of big tuffoons, it has disappeared in deep sea. Because of earthquakes and natural events, it has totally died out.
Platon is important because he is the first person in history who has mentioned about Atlantis. Another point is that Platon’s description is different from modern description. Today, Atlantis is known as a peaceful utopia. But Platon describes Atlantis as a technologically developed but morally collapsed society.
Ignatius Donelly is an American writer and is famous for his books about Atlantis. Ignatius Donelly’s description of Atlantis supports Platon’s.
According to a legend, the land disappeared at one night 12000 years ago. There are lots of speculations about its location. The first assumption in 1920 is that Atlantis is in Caribbean and it will come into view again in Bahamas. But most believed idea is that Atlantis is in Atlantic Ocean. (I also accept this idea. Because both names are similar to each other. Atlantis name can come from Atlantic. Perhaps Atlantis can mean the land of Atlantic. Maybe, this similarity is just a coincidence and ridiculous.)
Atlantis is still a mystery. I hope archaeologists and scientists will choose the mystery of Atlantis one day thanks to archaeology and science. I believe in that technological developments will help us to find Atlantis one day. Thanks for reading.
