Peru is a very rich country in terms of archaeology. The country hosted old American civilizations for centuries. I have written about Machu Picchu in Peru before. If you want to read more about this Inca city, please click here. And I want to mention another old American civilization in Peru today. It is Caral Civilization.
Caral Civilization is the oldest of South America. It was founded in foothills of The Andes five thousand years ago. Experts estimate the settlement started around three thousand years ago. And they estimate its population was maximum 20000. A Peruvian archaeologist rediscovered here twenty-five years ago. According to the archaeologist, the civilization was very good at medicine, engineering, and astronomy.
Caral Civilization people recorded their important information by knotting ropes because they didn’t know how to write. They recorded population, stocktaking, number of animals, taxes with this technique named “quipu”. There were six large pyramids on the region. It was a closed society, there weren’t any information interchange with other societies. This civilization always kept away from war and violence. People were always hardworking and in peace.
Archaeologists have never uncovered weapons and broken human skeletons in the area. They encountered findings related to drug or aphrodisiac usage. They also unearthed chairs made of whale skeleton, musical instruments made of vulture and pelican bones, necklaces made of stone beads, bags made of plants.
The civilization disappeared 3600 years ago because of natural disasters. Eathquakes and climate change demolished Caral Civilization. Landslides damaged pyramids. Heavy rain and storms caused floods. Floods affected agriculture negatively. People couldn’t cultivate. So, the area became unlivable for Caral people.
Natural disasters could and can ruin everything. Studies on Caral Civilization haven’t finished yet. I hope I will learn more about it. I care this civilization because it is as old as Ancient Egypt. Thank you for reading.
